Question #1
Do I have enough Trees to have a Timber Sale?
Answer:
This can be tricky to answer ! In a "nutshell "
Your trees need to have enough value in them to cover all of the Logging cost such as equipment and log mobilization, cutting and skidding and most importantly cleaning up your property after Logging is completed and have enough left over to be worth while for both parties.
All buyers will determine a trees value the same way!
1st- determine the trees species
2nd- determine the quality of the tree
3rd- determine the height and diameter at 4.5 feet from the ground, this will tell us how many board feet each tree will yield.
4th- we add each trees value and determine what the job will cost us to do adding up all the expenses such as , cutting and skidding, moving equipment in , hauling logs ect. This is how every company figures up what to pay for Standing Timber.
-What a tree is worth can vary considerably between one species! Buyers are looking for healthy, mature quality trees. Typically in Black Walnut it will take 8- 15 mature trees while other species will generally take 30 plus mature trees.
Question #2
Are my Trees large enough to sell?
Answer: A quick test you can do to tell if a tree is big enough to sell is to wrap your arms around the tree about 4.5 feet from the ground, if you can not touch your fingers or you can barley touch them, your Trees are likely big enough to sell.
Notes: It is a myth that Logging companies want extremely large trees, there is actually a saying in Logging "BIG TREES BIG PROBLEMS " these type of trees are more likely to cut bad with holes and issue that will devalue the usable lumber and they typically have extremely large crown or tops that lead can be very labor intensive for the loggers and the equipment to cut and drag and can cause more damage to trees being left behind.
Question #3
What species of trees do I have?
Answer: Most woods have a few dominant species.
-Some species have high Lumber markets such as Black Walnut and White Oak Trees and can potentially have extremely valuable Veneer Potential.
-While other species such as Pin Oak, Soft Maple and Hickory, Poplar , Beech have low market values.
Question #4
Determine your harvesting and selling goals?
Answer: This well help us properly mark your woods to match your exact needs and goals!
-Are you looking to just get fast money?
- To manage your Timber lot to repeatedly Harvest every 5 to 7 years ?
-Are you looking to clear areas for building or future projects?
- These are a few of the typical reasons people want to harvest. Harvesting is actually good for the woods especially when done correctly. It help keep the woods healthy and provides habit and shelter for animals .
Question #5
Do you have access to get the Timber out?
to where a Log Truck can get them out safely.
Question #6
When is the best time to sell my Timber?
Answer: Call us or text us to ask how the current markets are when your considering to sell. Typically for High-End Hardwood Standing Timber the best time to sell will be in the cooler months of the year in Ohio with July and August Typically being the worst months to sell in Ohio.
Question #7
Do you need to hire a Forester?
Answer- NO
- We have our own in-house Foresters that will expertly mark - evaluate and assist you from start to finish and they will walk you through each step along the way! We enjoy landowners that want to learn the process and we can give you tips to keep your Timber healthy and thriving for generations to come
-Most private Foresters typically charge 15-20% of the gross sale! To do the same thing we will do for you for free.
- If you do Higher a private Forester we would highly recommend being a part of the sale process!
- Meaning the Forester should give you a list of each Tree he marked and the Total board feet he scaled, so you can personally send them out to your own companies for bids!
- If your Forester does not give you this information I would immediately terminate his contract and fire him on the spot! We have seen this trend for years with 100s of landowners that had no clue what was being harvested or be sold.
FINAL NOTES:
Do your Trees have fence , nails or anything noticeable hanging or purtruding from them?
-Metal causes deep blue staining in the lumber and are often times at most Sawmills Logs are rejected and discarded .
Are there large holes in the trees your wanting to sell?
-The key is to sell Trees while the are healthy to get the top value. Trees with large holes are a gamble and all companies will do their own deductions of what they predict will be useable.
