UNDERSTANDING HOW TO SELL YOUR STANDING TIMBER IN OHIO
TIMBER SELLING CHECKLIST
1) Do I have enough Trees to sell my timber?
Answer: If you have large straight clean high-end Walnut Trees it may only take a few Trees to be worth while for Logging companies to buy your Trees.
However it typically will take 15 to 20 Walnut or White Oak Trees. Over the past few years Logging cost and Log hauling prices has almost doubled making smaller jobs extremely hard for companies to do.
2) Are my Trees large enough to sell?
Answer: A good quick test you can do to see if your trees are large enough to sell is to wrap your arms around a tree about 4.5 feet from the ground, if you cannot touch your fingers or can barley touch them your Trees are likely big enough to sell.
3) What species do you have?
Answer: Most woods have a few a few dominant species. Some species such as Black Walnut and White Oak Trees have very high market values. While other species such as Pin Oak, Soft Maple and Hickory have low market values.
4) Determine your harvesting and selling goals?
Answer: This will help us properly mark your Timberlot to your exact needs!
5) Do you have access to you Timber out to where a Log Truck can get them out safely.
6) Do you need to hire a Forester? NO - We have our own in-house Foresters that will expertly mark and assist you from start to finish and walk you through each step along the way!
Foresters typically charge 15-20% of the gross sale to do the same thing we will do for free. If you do use a Forester we would highly recommend being a part of the sale process! Meaning the Forester should give you a list of each Tree he marked and the Total board feet he scaled each Tree so you can personally send them out to your own companies for bids! If your Forester does not give you this information I would immediately terminate his contract.
NOTES: Do your Trees have fence , nails or anything noticeable? Metal causes deep blue staining in the lumber and are often rejected at the sawmill.
A mature Black Walnut tree will be around 20" to 30" across at 4.5 ft. from the ground.
