One of the most important factors to making the most money for your Black Walnut Trees or High-End Hardwood Standing Timber is to understand there are key months to sell your Standing Timber while Timber Markets are up.

The worst months to sell Your Black Walnut Trees or High-End Hardwood Standing Timber in Ohio will typically by July and August every year. Generally Standing Timber Markets will start to drop through the spring each year as the temperatures heat up and become the worst through through the summer.

This can be very tricky to answer ! " in a nutshell" we measure each trees "DBH" or 4.5 feet from the ground then determine the trees usable height and grade.
It takes years of in the field experience to accurately evaluate a trees grade and to accurately determine the amount of usable lumber it will yield! Over the past 8 year Ohio has had a huge spike of Logging Companies that claim to specializes in buying Black Walnut trees! It is extremely important to understand all Logging Companies are not created equal and there are only a small portion of companies that truly have the experience in these markets to ensure you get the money you deserve and most importantly have your trees harvested by an experienced company that will take the time to protect valuable future timber crops from being damaged! Even if a company pays well for the trees they harvest, we often see these companies with lack of experience have excessive damage to up-and -coming Walnut trees loosing you possibly thousands in future harvest.
This is usually determined by the trees you have , their size and quality! Some species have high market values and may only take a few trees such as Black Walnut trees & some species have very low market values and will take a larger number of trees to cover moving Logging equipment in and out and cover logging cost and labor and have enough money left over to be worth while to both parties.
There is no set number of trees needed for us to be interested in purchasing your trees, however. A good way to tell if you tree is large enough to sell is wrap your arms around the tree, if you can't touch your finger tips and can barley touch them, you have a large enough tree to sell. With all species with any Sawmill a grade log is a log 14" and diameter on its small end or the upper end going up the tree. So timber buyers are looking for trees that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd log in the tree will be at least 14" to have grade logs all the way up the tree.

Typically timber buyers are looking for trees that are around 19" to 20" DBH this measurement is taken at 4.5 feet from the ground. An easy way to do this is wrap your arms around the tree if you can not touch your fingers together or can barley touch them, your tree is most likely big enough to harvest.
IMPORTANT: When concidering to sell your Standing Timber it is important to understand in all species of timber except Black Walnut, a grade saw log diameter starts at 14" on the small end of the logs or the upper end. A typical tree looses around 1" in diameter for every 10 feet going up the tree, so most timber buyers are searching for trees with minimum 14'' on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd log in the tree.

A typical Logging Company -
Unfortunately most Logging Companies have very to little Forestry knowledge and just don't have the proper experience to accurately evaluate and appraise your Standing Timber and don't understand how cutting a certain tree in your woods will affect the trees around it, often times leading to over marking the woods setting your timberlot back for 20 to 30 years or more. Most people don't know this but most sawmills in Ohio only specialize in one maybe 2 species! So choosing a company that truly specializes in these species you have is a vital part to making the most money! In high-end Hardwood such as Black Walnut trees and White Oak there is very specific lengths, diameters and criteria that top buyers are searching for around the world! One of the most common mistakes we see even with veteran Logging Companies is these high-end logs cur into the wrong lengths loosing them and their clients possibly thousands of dollars! You can have an $6,000 dollar Walnut Veneer Tree cut into the wrong lengths making it $2,000. - $2500.
So it is crucial to use a company that truly specializes in your species.
